Design & Engineering of Stabilized Micro Gimbals for the Surveillance Industry

At Ascendant Engineering Solutions, we provide comprehensive engineering and development services for complex products with challenging requirements. Our knowledge of industrial design, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering allows us to develop advanced products, and our manufacturing experience ensures the design is able to be reproduced in a full scale manufacturing environment.

For this project, we designed two versions of a stabilized micro gimbal for this surveillance industry customer. This project required in-depth working knowledge of robotics, closed loop servo controls, custom electro-mechanical systems, embedded software and FPGA development, as well as imaging systems.

These stabilized 2-axis micro gimbals have on-board precision MEMS gyros containing highly miniaturized electronics with direct drive system and stabilization performance of < 80 µRad (line of site jitter). They have a configurable payload with NTSC and digital video (MPEG/H.264 over Ethernet), and are fully rain and dust proof to withstand the conditions of the surveillance environment.
